From Around Patchland: Cops Rescue Baby Deer Trapped Down Manhole

[Editor's Note: This story is from Port Jefferson (NY) Patch. I thought Belmont residents could certainly appreciate the predicatment of this baby deer and the rescue efforts on behalf of the landscaper and the police officers.]

Several Suffolk County (NY) police officers on Thursday afternoon rescued a baby deer trapped in a 20-foot deep manhole, after landscapers working near a construction site in Mount Sinai stumbled upon the frightened animal.

The manhole was on a piece of property near Route 25A and Nesconset Highway.

Emergency service officers Tobie Monaco, Billy Judge, Dan Coan and Walter Justincic arrived on the scene at about 5 p.m. to try to save the deer. After testing the manhole to make sure it was safe, Justincic donned a breathing mask and was lowered by his fellow officers down the manhole to strap a harness on the fawn, who police said was crying but seemed healthy.

By 8 p.m. the baby deer was out of the manhole, and when it was released it ran into the woods.
