Nearly 250 Firearms Turned In During San Mateo County Gun Buyback

The sheriff's office hosted the event where community members were able to receive money for handing over their guns anonymously.

BELMONT, CA — The sheriff's office hosted an anonymous gun buyback event Saturday in Belmont where community members received between $50 and $200 to turn in their firearms.

Locals handed over nearly 247 firearms during the four-hour event held by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in Belmont.

This included nine assault rifles and 12 3D-printed guns. Unused ammunition was also accepted.

Police said that since the sheriff's office began hosting these events in 2018 that they have collected more than 3,000 firearms.

“We are grateful to our community for their continued participation and commitment to making our neighborhoods safer by turning in unwanted firearms,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus. “Unsecured guns can too easily end up in the wrong hands, which is why these events are so important. We remain committed to offering a safe, responsible way for people to dispose of firearms they no longer want in their homes."

All firearms and ammunition collected are being processed for destruction, police said.
