Carlmont High School's volleyball team was one of 229 varsity girls high school programs across the country to earn a Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, it was announced last week.
In addition to performing very well on the court last fall, the 15 members of the Scots squad combined for an amazing 3.93 team GPA (on a 4.00 scale) during the 2012-13 academic year.
“I’m extremely proud of our girls for this achievement,” said coach Chris Crader.
“First and foremost, going to high school is about pursuing academic excellence, and our team did that unbelievably well, with a lot of help from the teachers and staff at Carlmont. On top of that, each of our girls is a great volleyball player and an exceptional teammate, and I feel very fortunate that I had the chance to work with all of them.”
Carlmont went 18-15 overall, and 10-4 in the Bay Division of the PAL last fall, reaching the CCS playoffs for the 11th time in 12 years. While the Scots lose seven seniors from last year’s team – Kallan Bedard, Monica Chin, Tori Herfert, Amanda Morris, Christina Rice, Erica Valbusa and Kayla Wright – the team returns eight players, each of whom started at least five matches last season.
Additionally, the frosh-soph team won the PAL title last fall, posting a 22-4 overall record, so the future remains bright for Carlmont volleyball.
Tryouts begin in mid-August, and the 2013 schedule kicks off in early September. The AVCA is the professional organization for volleyball coaches in the United States. With over 5,000 members, the AVCA administers academic and all-America award programs, runs two annual national coaching conventions, and provides numerous other educational benefits to collegiate, high school and club volleyball coaches.
The AVCA gave Team Academic Awards to a total of 622 programs for 2012-13, including girls & boys high schools, and mens & womens programs at all levels of two-year and four-year colleges and universities. Carlmont was the only San Mateo County high school honored this year.
