Police said mental health experts tried for about an hour to get the woman to surrender prior to the shooting. It was the 19th officer-involved shooting in Long Beach this year.

Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department said police were dispatched at 9:47 a.m. to Third Street and Long Beach Boulevard regarding "a person with a gun'' call. A SWAT team was dispatched to the location along with a mental evaluation team, she said.
During the ensuing 2-1/2 hour standoff, negotiators speaking English and Spanish tried to get the woman to surrender, but an officer-involved shooting occurred when she brandished the firearm, Arrona said.
Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell told reporters at the scene that police mental health experts tried for about an hour to get the woman to surrender prior to the shooting.
The woman was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to Arrona, who did not know where or how many times the woman was struck.
The shooting was captured on video and later broadcast by ABC7, which reported that the woman is in her late 20s or early 30s.
It was the 19th officer-involved shooting in Long Beach this year, Arrona said. Five of those were fatal, she said.
