Police Shoot, Kill Man After DUI Stop Christmas Eve

A DUI stop on Christmas Even ended in the fatal shooting of the driver who reached for a rifle, Brentwood police said.

BRENTWOOD, CA — Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man shot by Brentwood police during a traffic stop on Christmas Eve.

Police said they fired at the man after he grabbed for a gun during a traffic stop late Wednesday.

The shooting happened about 10:55 p.m. in the area of Balfour Road and Foothill Drive.

Officers stopped the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Brentwood police.

"While speaking to the driver, officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle," according to a statement from the Brentwood Police Department.

Officers searching the vehicle found a loaded, high-powered rifle inside, police said in the statement. When officers tried to arrest the man, police said he physically resisted and refused verbal commands. According to the statement, the man eventually grabbed the rifle.

Police said the suspect died at the scene.

"No officers were seriously injured during this incident," according to the statement.

The Brentwood Police Department and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting according to the Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident protocol.

Body-worn camera and in-car camera footage will eventually be released, police said.

Police will release the man's name when they have notified his family.
