Maddox Chen, a student at The Nueva School who lives in Burlingame, won the Middle School category and the “Best in Fest” Award at the Citizens Environmental Council’s 8th annual Student Film Fest on April 22. Amay Mehta, a Burlingame resident who is in the fourth grade at McKinley Elementary School, was the winner in the Elementary School division, and Alex Karanov and Eleanor Points of Burlingame High School took top honors in the High School category. All received cash prizes.
The winning video by Maddox, “Rising Tides Leading to Our Demise,” depicted the impacts that sea level rise will have on the Bay Area and beyond. Filmmaker Kristin Tièche, who judged the entries, said she was impressed by the details included in his entry.
Amay’s video, “The Impact of Vegetarianism on the Environment,” explained how a non-meat diet benefits our health and our planet, while the video submitted by Alex and Eleanor, “Food Doesn’t Belong in Landfills,” stressed the need to reduce food waste.
