For all who are struggling to make ends meet, Samaritan House is here to help. For over 50 years, Samaritan House has been leading the fight against poverty in San Mateo County. We are the only organization that delivers essential services and personalized support to connect the people living in poverty among us to the full range of resources and services they need. More than just ensuring our clients are fed, clothed, healthy, and housed, we help them create their own stability and remain an active, successful part of the community. Over recent years, more and more families in San Mateo County have been thrust into poverty. From the COVID-19 pandemic, to increasing wealth inequality, to the impacts of inflation and the housing crisis, the financial pressures on our neighbors have grown. Through it all, Samaritan House has been here to help – keeping pace with the demand and opening up new possibilities for people living in poverty. The Burlingame Police Department is holding a DUI and Driver's License checkpoint today between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. The goal is to reduce alcohol or drug related injuries and accidents while raising awareness of the dangers of driving in an impaired condition. "Over the course of the past three years, 58 total DUI collisions have claimed 1 life and resulted in 15 injury crashes harming many of our friends and neighbors," said Burlingame Police Chief Ed Wood in a statement. At the checkpoints, which will be located in south central Burlingame, drivers will be checked for signs of intoxication and proper licensing. Field sobriety tests will be administered to those appearing under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration. DUI deaths have decreased by 16 percent from 2007 to 2009 nationwide, but still were the largest category of vehicle fatalities in 2009.
