DUI Checkpoint Tonight

Burlingame will hold a DUI checkpoint tonight in the south central part of town.

The Burlingame Police Department is holding a DUI and Driver’s License checkpoint today between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m.

The goal is to reduce alcohol or drug related injuries and accidents while raising awareness of the dangers of driving in an impaired condition.

“Over the course of the past three years, 58 total DUI collisions have claimed 1 life and resulted in 15 injury crashes harming many of our friends and neighbors,” said Burlingame Police Chief Ed Wood in a statement.

At the checkpoints, which will be located in south central Burlingame, drivers will be checked for signs of intoxication and proper licensing. Field sobriety tests will be administered to those appearing under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration.

DUI deaths have decreased by 16 percent from 2007 to 2009 nationwide, but still were the largest category of vehicle fatalities in 2009.
