Man Who Was Killed In Burlingame By Light Rail Train Identified

A 75-year-old man who was struck and killed by a Caltrain in Burlingame on Monday has been identified as Michael Nichols of Burlingame.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA -- A 75-year-old man struck and killed by a Caltrain in Burlingame Monday afternoon has been identified as Michael Nichols of Burlingame, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

The fatal train strike was reported at 4:45 p.m. at the Burlingame Caltrain station. Agency officials said Nichols was "trespassing" on tracks in the area when he was hit.

The coroner's office said the cause of his death is still under investigation.

"No matter what the circumstances, it is always regrettable when a life is lost," the agency said in a statement. "Caltrain also would like to thank our passengers for their patience as we deal with these sad situations."

There were about 750 passengers on the train and no one was injured. Rail service in the area was delayed between 30 and 90 minutes for some passengers following the incident.

Caltrain said Nichols' death was the eighth fatal train strike of the year, and the ninth was reported about three hours later in Mountain View. The victim in the second strike has not yet been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office, and no passengers on the train were injured.
