New Barnes & Noble To Open In Burlingame

The first Barnes & Noble to open in the area since 2005 will cut the ribbon in downtown Burlingame next week.

BURLINGAME, CA — Barnes & Noble is gearing up to open a new store in Burlingame as the bookseller sets its sights on expansion after more than a decade of economic struggles.

The bookseller added more new stores last year than it had from 2009 to 2019 combined, citing "tremendous growth" and "exceptionally strong sales" after more than 15 years of decline. Now using a revamped design and a strategy that lets local managers take the reins, the tide seems to be turning. Company leaders expect to open 30 new stores by the end of the year.

"To be opening new bookstores of all sizes at such a pace would have been unthinkable just a few years ago," said James Daunt, Barnes & Noble's CEO. "This new store has a unique footprint and maintains the time-testing formula of well stocked bookstores staffed by excellent booksellers. This year we have had much to celebrate and bringing this stunning new Barnes & Noble to the Burlingame community is high on the list."

The new Peninsula location will open Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1232 Burlingame Avenue, next to the Pottery Barn. Author Abigail Hing Wen will cut the ribbon and sign a few books starting at 10 a.m.

"The Avenue is the social center of this city, and our bookselling team has been hard at work creating a beautiful bookstore to complement and enhance its unique small-town atmosphere," said Danielle Cardona, the store's manager. "A bookstore is more than just a place to buy books, and we look forward to being a community hub.
