Since construction began back in the fall, the new Safeway and surrounding businesses have really started to take shape.
After about six months of construction, Burlingame Patch is checking in on the new Safeway project. Construction began in January 2011 and the store is expected to open in August.
The project spans 1420-1450 Howard Ave. and 249 Primrose Rd., the former location of the Safeway and Walgreens, as well as the Wells Fargo on Primrose.
The 45,645-square-foot space will include 12,428 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 5,460 square feet of office space above. The Wells Fargo will be remodeled as part of the project.

The city council approved demolishing the Safeway at El Camino Real and Howard Avenue to make way for a new, improved store at its Feb. 1, 2010 meeting after nearly 12 years of discussion on the topic.
Updates on the project are presented on the City's website.
