School Board to Adopt 2011-12 Budget

The Burlingame School District Board of Trustees will vote tonight on cuts for next year.

The Burlingame School District Board of Trustees should adopt the 2011-12 budget at Tuesday  night's meeting, following a public hearing and months of discussing and prioritizing cuts.

The board must submit a budget to San Mateo County by June 30. Since this is the final board meeting before that date, the trustees must adopt a budget tonight.

While the board received additional funding through the Burlingame Community for Education Foundation and the Game On campaign, members were still instructed to assume a $950,000 decrease in budget when planning for the 2011-12 year. Additionally, the budget holds unknowns as changes to school financing continue in Sacramento.

Under the proposed budget, the district would have 9.82 percent in reserves at the end of the 2011-12 school year. As part of the budget discussion, the board will have the opportunity to reinstate programs or staff previously cut.

Also at the meeting, the school board will discuss the results of parcel tax polling and a possible parcel tax or bond measure on the November ballot, and the education specifications for Hoover School.
