Shelter Network Celebrates 25 Years
Shelter Network turns 25 this year, and took a night to commemorate the work the organization has done helping the homeless.
A quarter century ago, community leaders looked around San Mateo County and saw homelessness rising around them. They got together to work towards a solution and founded , a nonprofit that provides housing and supportive services in San Mateo County.
On Wednesday, Burlingame-based Shelter Network celebrated its 25th anniversary during a birthday party—including cards, presents and a cake—at the First Step for Families transitional housing facility in San Mateo. Archived newsletters dating back to 1989, as well as photos from the last 25 years, were showcased.
“When Shelter Network was first founded in 1987, the agency had three full-time staff and served 54 clients in the first year,” said Karae Lisle, executive director of Shelter Network. “Now, Shelter Network serves more than 4,600 homeless clients each year, thanks to over 100 dedicated staff, working across seven facilities, more than 12,000 volunteers, and countless more advocates.”

More than 100 volunteers, staff members, donors, program graduates and community leaders including Burlingame Mayor Jerry Deal gathered in celebration of the organization and its mission of ending homelessness. Founders were also present.
“Without every person in this room, we wouldn’t be here celebrating 25 years of successfully breaking the cycle of homelessness through leadership, innovation, and impact,” said Shelter Network Board of Directors Chair Christine Krolik. Shelter Network staff shared their stories of the past 25 years and set their sights on the future. Wait lists for shelter each night continue to grow, moving beyond 50 families per night, including an influx of homeless Veterans.

The evening highlighted Jennifer Cass, a current Shelter Network board member and former Shelter Network client. She shared her story with attendees.
“I have memories of nights lying on my bed with Neva, listening to the radio, and feeling—for the first time in years—truly safe. This feeling of comfort and care allowed me to focus on my goals and was a huge factor contributing to my success,” said Cass. “Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for Shelter Network, and for all the staff and supporters that change people’s lives.”
Cass arrived at Shelter Network as a single mother, but found housing and help to secure employment. Soon she was taking care of her daughter and working at Sling Media in Foster City. She moved into permanent housing after four months.
Shelter Network employees strive to help more homeless families and individuals find success like Cass’s. While looking back on 25 years of success, they know their mission is far from accomplished.
“It has been a pleasure to see this amazing agency grow to great heights, and maintain the pervasive foundation of support evidenced by everyone here today,” said former Board Chair Marcia Pade. “I am certain the next 25 years will be even more astounding.”
