Calabasas School Bell up for Historic Landmark Designation

The bell hung in the original Calabasas School House, which was constructed in 1890.

Original post: The original Calabasas School bell is being considered for a historic landmark designation.

The bell is located at A.E. Wright Middle School at 4029 Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas.

"The Calabasas School House was constructed in 1890 and the bell hung in there until 1950," said Andrew Cohen-Cutler, a Calabasas planner. The school house bell was given to the Las Virgenes Unified School District, Cohen-Cutler said.

The original Calabasas School was located at 24454 Calabasas Road, next to what is currently Sperling Nursery. It was last occupied by Pelican's Retreat, a restaurant.

The Historic Preservation Commission is expected vote on whether to recommend the historic designation to the City Council at its 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 meeting.
