Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Names Local Girl One of LA’s Emerging Leaders

Calabasas Girl Scout Bailey Higa has been named one of 94 Emerging Leaders by Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles in recognition of her outstanding extra-curricular and academic accomplishments. 

On Wednesday, December 5, Higa will join nearly 100 additional Emerging Leaders and hundreds of the most accomplished women in Los Angeles for a luncheon and day of mentorship at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. The event will conclude a year of celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA.

"I am so excited to be a part of it," Higa, an Agoura High School senior, told Patch. "I'm hoping to learn what it takes to be a good female leader when I meet with the top women CEO's in Los Angeles."

A recipient of the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest level of achievement in Girl Scouting, Higa has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She also was honored with membership in the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles “Tournament Troop” and marched in the 2012 Tournament of Roses® Parade.

Higa was chosen among 400 applicants for the honor, according to Carmelita Bouie, manager of communications for the scouting organization.

"Girls were chosen based on their demonstration of leadership experience, past awards achievement and extracurricular activities, such as earning their Girl Scout Gold, Silver or Bronze Awards," said Bouie. "Bailey has achieved all three [scouting awards]."

Higa's career goals include marine biology and environmental conservation. She has learned a lot about leadership through Girl Scouts, and enjoys hosting workshops for younger Girl Scouts.

"I am so proud to be part of an organization that has had such a big impact for women," said Higa, who will receive an honorary pin of recognition at Wednesday's ceremony.
