Hikers found "skeletonized remains" inside a rugged area of Malibu Canyon on Monday, according to authorities.

CALABASAS, CA — Two hikers found human remains in Malibu Canyon on Monday, prompting the Sheriff's Department to investigate, according to the city of Malibu.

The hikers found what authorities have called "skeletonized remains" inside a rugged area of the canyon with heavy foliage inside Malibu Creek State Park.

The remains were found near a destroyed vehicle, the presence of which was noted by authorities about 18 months ago, but deputies don't yet know if the remains are linked to that vehicle, according to a statement from the city.
