Trash Dumping Surcharge May Be Levied
As a landfill company in Simi Valley eyes expansion, the possibility of levying a surcharge on its users in LA County is raised.

People in western Los Angeles County should be charged extra for having their trash buried in Ventura County, a Ventura County supervisor said in remarks reported today, according to the City News Service.
Supervisor Steve Bennett wants a surcharge imposed on loads of trash buried in a Simi Valley landfill if the garbage originates in L.A. County, the Ventura County Star reported.
Nearly 40 percent of the garbage currently dumped at Simi Valley comes from L.A. County addresses in Calabasas, Agoura Hills and the western San Fernando Valley.

Bennett is asking four fellow supervisors to slap a $4.50 or $5 per ton surcharge on L.A. trash destined for the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, operated by Waste Management of California. The company is asking to expand the dump. Riverside County may have set the pattern for surcharges on out-of-county trash, when it enacted such fees in 1998.
The surcharge would send a "political message'' to Los Angeles County, Bennett said.
