Capitola Police Arrest Senior Threatening to Kill Congressman Sam Farr

Stephen Brown, 72, was found at the military recruitment center on 41st Avenue after threatening to kill Farr and blow up the county building.

Capitola police stopped what ended up being an idle threat Monday evening when they arrested Stephen Brown, a 72-year-old transient who threatened to kill Congressman Sam Farr and blow up the county building.

Around mid-afternoon, Brown entered Farr's office in Santa Cruz and told a woman there he was going to take her out to lunch. When the said no, he waslked out of the building saying he would wait for Farr and blow up the county building, Deputy April Skalland said in a prepared statement.

The incident was reported to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office, who alerted low enforcement countywide.

Around 5 p.m., Capitola police found Brown at the military recruitment office on 41st Avenue and arrested him after a short struggle, Skalland said.

Brown was charged with making a bomb threat and terrorist threats.

"Investigators determined there was no evidence Brown was actively pursuing plans to harm Farr or others in the county building," Skalland said.

Brown is being held in Santa Cruz County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
