Hooded Criminal Smashes Cyclist over Head with Glass Bottle

The assault took place at Brommer Street Park just after midnight on Monday.

A man who was assaulted early Monday morning near Brommer Street Park was injured so badly he had to be flown by medical helicopter over the hill to a trauma center.

According to Sgt. Mitch Medina, the man, 35, was riding his bike down 30th Avenue between Capitola Road and Brommer Street at 12:10 a.m. when somoene ran up behind him and smashed a bottle over his head.

The victim fled for a short distance and met up with deputies and emergency personnel a block away near Thompson Avenue and Saunders Lane.

He was not able to provide a statement to police, and Medina said it's not clear if that was because he was injured so badly or if he was simply uncooperative. 

No arrests have been made but a witness said the suspect was in a group of three young males wearing black hooded sweatshirts.

Nothing so far has indicated that the incident is gang-related, Medina said.

This is not the first crime at Brommer Street Park.  in the same location.
