RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

Residential burglaries dropped from six to three during this week. Two of the cases were attributed to open/unlocked sliding glass doors, and one sliding glass door was pried open. A safe, jewelry, cameras, and cash were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries remains at 3.6.
Sheriff's safety tip: Don’t leave windows and doors open to ventilate. While it can get very warm, it takes less time to open a window and cool down a home after you have returned then it does to replace all of your stolen property!
COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES
Commercial burglaries declined to four during this period compared to five the previous one. All instances occurred in closed business where a glass door was shattered, a window removed, and the points of entry in the other two could not be determined. The 2011 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is now 3.0.
VEHICLE BURGLARIES
Vehicle burglaries decreased from nine seven this week. All of the break-ins took place in high-volume commercial parking lots. Five of the vehicles were SUVs. Property reported stolen included tools, clothing, MP3 players, credit cards, cameras, wallets, purses, and a flute. The new 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.5.
Sheriff's safety tip: We constantly warn owners of SUVs not to leave anything in their vehicles due to a lack of trunk space and the fact that criminals are well aware of this. Again, the majority of the cases during this period proved that point.
VEHICLE THEFTS
Vehicle thefts dropped from four the previous week to three reported during this period. A Honda and an SUV were taken from high-volume commercial parking lots. A Chevrolet was stolen from a residential tract. The current 2011 weekly average in this category is 2.6.
Sheriff's safety tip: If you own one of the most commonly reported stolen vehicles in Cerritos, such as an 80’s or 90’s Honda or Toyota, we would urge that you use a steering wheel locking device. Based on the variety of vehicles taken each week in addition to Hondas and Toyotas, a sound approach would be to equip your vehicle regardless of what type it is.
