UPDATED: Cerritos Burglary Attempt Thwarted, Suspect Evades Capture Despite Intense Search

A homeowner alerts authorities when he hears a burglar trying to break into his home.

Updated at 5 p.m.: Search called off, suspect evades capture.

Sheriff's deputies conducted an intense search for a suspected burglar in a neighborhood near for more than two hours today, but the suspect evaded capture, authorities said.  

The incident began about 1:30 p.m. when a homeowner on Carmenita Road near Destino Place called the sheriff's department when he heard someone trying to break into his residence, Sgt. Deborah Cotto of the told Patch.

Upon being spotted, the male suspect fled over a wall in the back of the home, Sgt. Ciro Racowschi added.

Arriving deputies immediately set up a containment and conducted a lengthy search for the man with assistance from a sheriff's helicopter unit.

The suspect was not located and the search was called off about 4:30 p.m. Cotto said no property was stolen during the burglary attempt.

The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt. Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call the Cerritos Sheriff's Station at (562) 860-0044.
