SAN to Host U.S. Citizenship Clinic, Free Screening of Film on Indian Homosexuality

Both events take place in the city of Artesia and will be hosted by the South Asian Network.

The South Asian Network (SAN) invites the community to take part in two events it will be hosting this summer in the city of Artesia.

Free Movie Screening

On Sunday, July 29, SAN will be hosting a free screening of “I Am”, a groundbreaking film by Sonali Gulati. The documentary reveals the stories of gay and lesbian Indians while touching upon the deeper meaning of family. Exploring ideas of individuality and acceptance in a landscape where being gay was, until recently, a criminal and punishable offense.

The screening will be held at the , located at 18750 Clarkdale Ave in Artesia from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested in attending should email RSVP@apiequalityla.org to reserve a seat for the screening. Admission is FREE and complimentary snacks and drinks will be provided. 

Free U.S. Citizenship Clinic

Starting next month, SAN will also be hosting its U.S. Citizenship Clinic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays -- August 13, September 17, and October 15.

"If you are a permanent resident ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, our staff and volunteers will be at the clinics to help guide you through the process," the organization stated. 
  
The U.S. Citizenship Clinic, which will be held at the South Asian Network office located at 18173 Pioneer Blvd., Suite I in Artesia, is also free. Appointments can be made by calling (562) 403-0488 or e-mailing Neeta Goswami at neeta@southasiannetwork.org.

According to the organization's website, the South Asian Network was founded in 1990 to provide an open forum for people of South Asian origin to gather and discuss social, economic, and political issues affecting the community, with the goal of raising awareness, engagement and advocacy among community members leading to an empowered and active community.

The board, staff and volunteers are the most diverse and representative of any South Asian organization. Comprised of a majority of women, the team includes persons of Bangladeshi, Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani and Sri Lankan origin from Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Christian, Muslim and Sikh traditions; first generation immigrants and first generation U.S. born; speakers of Bengali, Fiji Hindi, Gujarati, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Singhalese, Tamil and Urdu.
