Council Preview: Should Walgreens Be Allowed to Sell Hard Alcohol?

Citrus Heights City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 14.

Citrus Heights residents may soon have another spot to purchase hard alcohol.

Walgreens at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard has requested to upgrade their alcohol license in order to sell hard alcohol like vodka and rum. The store's current alcohol licence allows them to sell packaged beer and wine.

However, Citrus Heights City Councilmembers may protest the upgrade at Thursday's city council meeting.

According to city documents, in 2010, all three Citrus Heights Walgreens applied for alcohol licenses in order to sell packaged beer and wine. At the time, a Walgreen representative told councilmembers that there were no plans to apply for an upgraded alcohol license and that selling hard alcohol would "be bad for business and contrary to their family environment," according to city documents.

Now, the Walgreens located at 6199 Sunrise Blvd. is requesting an upgrade.

During the Feb. 14 council meeting, councilmembers will have the opportunity to protest the upgrade, approve the upgrade or protest the upgrade if certain conditions aren't met.

Citrus Heights City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 in the City Hall council chambers, 7117 Greenback Lane.
