Gas Leak Near LC Bandell Park Prompts Evacuation, Street Closure
The leak was fixed shortly after 2 p.m. and was likely caused by workers at a home under construction in the 900 block of Alameda Boulevard, a Coronado Fire Department Battalion Chief said.
The Coronado Fire Department, SDG&E and others responded to a gas leak on Alameda Boulevard Wednesday morning, according to the City of Coronado spokeswoman Janine Zúñiga.
The Coronado Police Department shut down Alameda Road between 9th and 10 streets near LC Bandell Park around 11:15 a.m.
"They were considering pushing possible evacuations [of residents] but they're not going to be evacuating. They're still trying to figure out what kind of gas it is, where it's coming from and they closed the road in both directions," Zúñiga said before SDG&E fixed the leak shortly after 2 p.m.
The natural gas leak occurred in the street outside a home under construction in the 900 block of Alameda Boulevard, said Coronado Fire Department Duty Battalion Chief Perry Peake. 20 construction workers at the residence were evacuated as a precaution.
Construction at the home was the likely cause of the leak, Peake said.
"They had done what they were supposed to do but somehow still cut the line," he said.

No injuries occurred as a result of the leak. Instruments were used to measure the level of gas in the air at neighboring homes but evacuations were not made because "appreciable readings" were not found.
The Federal Fire Department from Naval Air Station North Island and San Diego Fire-Rescue also responded to the call for service, Peake said.
