Motorcycle Crash Kills Navy SEAL On Leave in Indonesia

A Navy SEAL stationed in Coronado died in a motorcycle accident in Indonesia, U.S. Navy officials announced Friday.

Michael Tatham, 33, died Oct. 12 in Bali, where he was on rest and recuperation leave. He was scheduled to return to Afghanistan, where he had been on forward deployment as part of operation Enduring Freedom.

β€œMichael Tatham was a dedicated SEAL operator and a cherished teammate,” said Capt. Collin Green, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group ONE. β€œHe was the epitome of professionalism and his humble and selfless service to our country made him a role model for all.”

Chief Petty Officer Tatham was born in Fayetteville, N.C., and had been
a SEAL since 2004. He was a highly decorated combat veteran, Magallon said.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Tatham is survived by his parents and younger brother.
