SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — It's a day of recognition on Monday for Santa Clara County residents who identify as bisexual.

For the third consecutive year, the Santa Clara County Office of LGBTQ Affairs is inviting community leaders, advocates, allies and the public to participate in the annual Bisexual Visibility Day Flag Raising Ceremony to commemorate International Celebrate Bisexuality Day.

The Flag Raising Ceremony celebrates significant milestones in LGBTQ+ history and accelerates acceptance of bisexuality, drawing attention to the experiences and resiliency of this community.

"Sexual orientation is often viewed as straight or gay and, as a result, bisexual people often experience discrimination from within the (lesbian and gay) community and outside of it, said Maribel Martínez, director of the Office of LGBTQ Affairs.

This progressive county will honor the day at 8:30 a.m. with dignitaries appearing for the flag-raising ceremony at the County Government Center located at 70 W. Hedding St. in San Jose.

The ceremony marks the 20th annual Bisexual Day of Visibility. This day is celebrated around the world to recognize the courage it takes to live openly and authentically as a member of the bisexual community, which includes the broader bi+ community of people who describe their sexual orientation as pansexual, polysexual, omnisexual, fluid or queer.

In a world where societal change may either travel at warp speed or at a snail's pace, the acceptance level of the community has endured its challenges that came to a head during Stonewall Riots in New York City. The gay community celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the drag-queen uprising in June.
