Cupertino Breaks Ground On Long-Awaited Westport Development

The first phase of the project, which includes below-market-rate senior housing and retail space, is expected to be completed in 2024.

CUPERTINO, CA — Community leaders and elected officials broke ground last week on Westport Cupertino, a mixed-use development project that will provide 259 units of housing that includes below-market-rate units for seniors.

The project, which took nearly six years and several proposals to develop, received final approval last December by the city council. The development includes a senior rental living community with 123 assisted living units, 35 memory care rooms and 48 more senior below-market-rate units.

The site, located at 21267 Stevens Creek Boulevard, will also include 20,000 square feet of retail and 44,100 square feet of open space.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Fremont) and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian were among the elected officials at the groundbreaking, along with Cupertino Mayor Darcy Paul and several councilmembers.

“The Westport Project will provide much-needed housing for working families and senior citizens, particularly below market rate housing,” Khanna said.

Paul thanked the public for its continued engagement in the project.

“When we are committed to a system that places public sentiment, input, and inclusion of perspective above autocratic means, then the work, of necessity, requires a great deal of thought and discussion,” Paul said. “We have delivered, and elements of this project have changed, from the basic vision to some of the final details. I’m very proud of our work together.”

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2024.
