Cupertino City Manager Resigns After Six Months In Role

CUPERTINO, CA — Cupertino City Manager Jim Throop resigned from his position after just six months on the job.

Throop, who began in the role in January, will leave the post on July 22 and said he was retiring from public service, according to a news release from the city.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside some of the best, hardest-working employees I have seen,” Throop said. “I am grateful to the dedicated staff serving Cupertino residents, and am proud of what we have accomplished together.”

The new city manager is expected to be the other top candidate from the city council’s recent recruitment for the position. The person, who the city said accepted the offer, has not yet been named.

In the news release, the city cited Throop’s leadership in reopening City Hall after it was closed for two years during the pandemic. Throop also led the completion of the Cupertino Library Expansion Project and passed a balanced budget of $127 million, according to the city.

“The City Council wishes Jim the best in his next steps and in retirement,” Mayor Darcy Paul said. “Administratively, we start the next fiscal year with a balanced and healthy budget, and with a number of projects for the community that will be of much benefit to our residents and the surrounding area. We thank Jim for his service, and we wish him well.”
