Fatal I-280 Hit-And-Run Victim Identified

SANTA CLARA VALLEY, CA — A man fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday evening when he got out of his vehicle after causing an initial crash on Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office. Gabriel Armendaraz, 29, of San Jose, got out of his green Honda sedan after it struck the right rear side of a white Chevrolet pickup truck driving south and traveled out of control, consequently hitting a tan Toyota sedan, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Armendaraz emerged from the sedan and was struck by another vehicle traveling south that did not stop after the collision, according to the CHP.

The San Jose man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman driving the Chevrolet was taken to a hospital as a precaution, while the man driving the Toyota was also hospitalized for minor facial injuries, CHP officials said.

The Toyota driver had three children in the backseat, but none of them were injured, according to the CHP. A CHP officer took the children home to their mother.
