One Killed After Shooting At South Bay Airbnb House Party

Airbnb said that the host banned parties in her house rules and that the party that was attended by up to 200 people was unauthorized.

SUNNYVALE, CA — A house party with up to 200 people at an Airbnb rental in Sunnyvale on Saturday night turned deadly after a shooting killed one person and injured another.

Before the shooting, officers had responded about 10:20 p.m. to reports of loud music at the home in the 1400 block of Navarro Drive. They found 150 to 200 people, many aged 16 to 19 years old, Sunnyvale police said.

While the officers were waiting for additional resources and trying to identify the home's owner, they heard shots fired, police said.

Police did not release a motive in the shooting. On Monday, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's office announced the name of the deceased as 18-year-old Elias Elhania.

"It was ten minutes straight of just cars and people walking past my street," Sunnyvale City Councilman Mason Fong, who lives nearby, said to KTVU. "I figured it was a house party. I looked out my window and realized it was a lot of young people."

In a statement to ABC7, Airbnb said that the host banned parties in her house rules and that the party was unauthorized. The company has deactivated the listing as it investigates the incident.

“Airbnb bans parties, and we condemn the senseless gun violence that took place in Sunnyvale,” Airbnb said in the statement. “Our dedicated Safety team is urgently working to support those impacted by this tragedy, and we are working with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety to offer our assistance with their investigation."
