Scuffle Over Stanley Tumbler At Cupertino Target Leads To 2 Arrests

Police allege the pair cut the line, stole a cup and fought with customers who tried to stop them from leaving the store.

CUPERTINO, CA — A man and woman were arrested on suspicion of robbery last week after police allege they stole a coveted tumbler and fought with customers at a Cupertino Starbucks in January.

According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the incident centered around a limited-edition "winter pink" Stanley Quencher Tumbler that quickly ignited a nationwide craze earlier in the year. Investigators said shoppers were gathered on a Saturday morning at a Starbucks inside the Target on Stevens Creek Boulevard hoping to snag one of the cups.

Witnesses told deputies a man and woman in their 20s entered the store and cut the line, leading the retailer to refuse to sell them the item. Investigators allege the man jumped over the counter, knocking a barista out of the way, and grabbed one of the cups before attempting to flee.

Deputies said a customer blocked the exit, and the man was tackled to the ground before the female suspect punched the customer, grabbing a bag with the cup inside from another person's hands before the pair left the store.

The sheriff's office said an extensive investigation led detectives to identify both culprits, who were arrested last week and booked into the Main Jail on suspicion of robbery.
