Small Plane Runs Out Of Gas, Lands On Bay Area Highway
The CHP is investigating Monday's emergency landing.
CUPERTINO, CA — State Route 85 was partially blocked for several hours Monday in Cupertino after a small plane made an emergency landing in the highway's southbound lanes.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the aircraft successfully landed around 7 a.m. near the McClellan Road overpass, south of Stevens Creek Boulevard. The CHP said the plane's pilot — and sole occupant — was uninjured and had to land due to low fuel. No vehicles were hit during the landing.
The incident required CHP officers to close three southbound while crews worked to remove the plane's wings and secure the aircraft for towing. The CHP said two lanes reopened shortly after 1 p.m. after the plane was moved to the right shoulder. The remaining lane reopened within a few minutes after the scene was clear.
