5 Things You Can’t Do in Davis

Fireworks are illegal, but what else is prohibited in Davis?

As you probably know, fireworks are illegal in Davis, although you can legally purchase them in surrounding towns like Dixon, Winters and Woodland. With that (fairly understandable) rule in mind, let’s look at 5 things you can’t do in Davis, starting with the fireworks:

  1. Rather than let kids run around with bottle rockets and black cats, the city puts on a public show in Community Park. Otherwise, fireworks are “prohibited unless authorized by resolution of the city council,” according to the department’s website.
  2. No person shall discharge any firearm, slingshot or bow-and-arrow in company with a metal-tipped arrow without a special permit in writing from the police chief or the city council. So before you break out your bow-and-arrow this summer, have a quick chat with the city council.
  3. Standing still while smoking in public is against the law. If you’re outside, you must be moving at a steady clip if you’d like to have a cigarette. So, technically, any person who ever took a cigarette break outside the G Street Pub probably should have been rocking back and forth or walking in tight circles.
  4. You can’t have more than six chickens or pigeons at one residence. The same goes for rabbits, according to this pretty hilarious Wiki page and City Code 8-2.102. Roosters are illegal.
  5. You can’t wear headphones in both ears while riding your bike. You’re allowed to have one headphone in, which probably has something to do with the use of hands-free cell phone devices. It’s basically the same law that applies to vehicles.
