Protecting Local Wood Ducks: A Great Letter From a Davis 4th Grader
California Duck Days on February 23 will have more information about ducks.

Davis Patch received this letter from local Fourth Grader Henri T Schulz on Wednesday. Here it is:

I'm a 4th Grade student at Fred T Korematsu Elementary in Davis and would appreciate it if you could include this in the Davis Patch - my Dad helped me to publish this:
Wood ducks are beautiful birds. The problem is that they don’t have enough trees to nest in due to the lack of riparian habitat. They need to nest in trees otherwise they would have to nest on the ground where the eggs are likely to be eaten by predators such as foxes or raccoons.

I have gone to the Vic Fazio Wildlife Area and saw wood ducks, but there aren’t many trees. A wildlife biologist says that the best solutions to help wood ducks are habitat protection and restoration of degraded areas.
Another solution is duck boxes, which provide safe nesting areas. The California Waterfowl website (http://www.calwaterfowl.org/woodduck-program/) has some plans. California Duck Days on 23 February will also have information - http://www.yolobasin.org/DuckDays2013.cfm.
We should all work together to add more wood ducks in our community!

Henri T Schulz
