Davis High Confessions: Should These Anonymous Facebook Posts Concern Parents?

Students are posting anonymously to a rapidly growing Facebook page called Davis High Confessions.

UPDATE: As of Tuesday morning, the page has been removed.

How the page works might concern some parents and faculty members.

Students type whatever they want into a survey website and it gets anonymously posted by the page's administrator to the Davis High Confessions Facebook page for anybody to see. (If you've "liked" the page, the confessions will show up in your Facebook NewsFeed).

The posts often feature specific names of students and teachers. Here are a few examples, just to give you a sense:

  • #34 When I was in stage craft last year I took people's projects and broke them
  • #35 Me and my freshman friend in college put on hot dog costumes during the davis/jesuit soccer game and the whole community freaked out...the best part being not one single homosexual person was offended, only random over-protective Davis mothers
  • #42 I smoked a bowl in the photo dark room in 2011 when we had a sub. Totally got away with it
  • #50 One time I threw a un-peeled orange at the principal before Dr. Moore and he thought it was someone else, they got suspended for a day and I didnt come forth to say I did it
  • #57 I used to be a teacher's assistant for a science teacher in the s-wing, and one day me and the other TA hooked up during class in the back room with the single entrance.
  • #58 I purposefully pee right next to people in urinals just to make them uncomfortable.
  • #59 I stole all the bathroom, room number and building signs the day before school started to confuse all the sophomores.
  • #60 My teacher put me in the front row so he could look at my boobs... I knew it because I've caught him totally checking me out numerous times

These types of anonymous-posting pages exist all over the Internet. There's even one at UC Davis.

The existence of a page like this at the university, however, feels different than the existence of a page at the high school, where most students are under 18.

This Reuters story explores the rise of these "confessions" pages, which have popped up at other high school campuses in the recent past. One issue of concern is the potential for cyberbullying.
