To the Person Who Returned My Wallet Today – Thank You!

I left my wallet at a gas station in Davis and drove away to Dixon this morning. An unknown woman helped get it back to me, and for that I'm thankful.

I stopped to get some gas this morning before taking a drive to Dixon for work.

In an effort to kill several birds with one stone, I decided to make a phone call while pumping. As I stopped at a pump in the Chevron parking lot on Covell and Anderson, I dialed my friend's number.

Because I was holding my phone with my right hand, I had to remove my wallet, swipe my card and pump my gas using only my left hand. It’s a clunky process and it can be distracting, but it's not too difficult.

When my gas finished pumping, I hooked the nozzle back up, got in my car and drove west to Dixon, ending my phone conversation just before pulling out of the Chevron parking lot.

When I reached my destination in Dixon, I got out of my car and took about three steps across the parking lot before realizing that my back pocket was vacant.

I could picture it immediately: my wallet, sitting on top of the gas pump where I placed it because I didn’t have a spare hand with which to hold it during my one-handed pumping operation.

I got back in my car and began driving back to Davis. I Googled “Chevron Covell Davis” as I pulled out of the parking lot, but didn’t have enough phone reception to make the call.

There was $40 in the aforementioned wallet, but that wasn’t the part I dreaded. It was my debit card, my work credit card and my drivers license. Stuff like that. Even my Co-op membership card.

My days are already busy enough. The process of getting new copies of all these things sounded horrible to me. Plus, my Mishka's stamp card is only two away from a free coffee!

Anyway, as I approached the 113, I tried the call again. (Illegal, because I was driving, but these felt like extenuating circumstances). This time Chevron answered. I told them I forgot my wallet at the pump, to which the clerk asked me, “Do you drive a red Toyota?”

Yes, I do drive a red Toyota!

He told me that a woman saw the wallet as I drove away and came in to return it. She told the clerk that the owner of the wallet drove a red Toyota.

When I got to Chevron, the clerk looked out the window to confirm the color of my car and then handed me my wallet.

I buckled back up and returned to Dixon, thankful for the fact that people can be great! So, whoever returned my wallet, if you happen to be reading, thanks!
