Victims Identified: Davis Couple Suffered Stab Wounds in South Davis Double-Homicide

The officers discovered signs of forced entry to the residence.

UPDATE: The victims in Sunday's double homicide have been identified as longtime Davis residents Claudia Maupin, 76, and Chip Northup, 88. 

Northup played in the Putah Creek Crawdads, a local band who often played at the Farmers Market. They shared a statement Monday night. We'll have more updates Tuesday morning. 

Both victims in this weekend's double homicide suffered stab wounds, the Davis Police Department said Monday afternoon, but the official cause of death hasn't been determined by the Yolo County Coroner.

The victims’ identities have not yet been released, but the two are believed to be an "elderly couple (male and female) in the mid-70s to late-80s age range." 

"Homicides are a rarity in Davis. We understand the violent nature of this crime is a shock to our community," said Lt. Paul Doroshov in a statement. "We will be fielding extra patrol officers as a preventative measure."

Investigators from the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, Yolo County Coroner’s Office, West Sacramento Police Department, California Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations are assisting in this case.

The location of the homicides is in an area that has been targeted by home burglars in recent months, but it's not known if the two are related. Police are still not releasing details or identities. 

STORY: While responding to a welfare check in south Davis Sunday night, Davis Police officers discovered two dead bodies in a home on the 4000 block of Cowell Boulevard.

"During the course of the investigation, officers discovered signs of forced entry to the residence," said Davis Police Lt. Paul Doroshov in a statement. "The Davis Police Department is currently investigating the two deaths as homicides."

According to Sunday's police log, dispatch received this call from a female on Cowell Boulevard around 9:20 p.m.: "[She] hasn't heard from her parents all day, [she] went to check on them and the car is on scene there are lights on inside - [she] has not gone inside."

At this point in time, police say a motive has not been established. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact police at 530-747-5400.
