Candidate Filing Period Opens

The filing period for Diamond Bar City Council and school board candidates began Monday and will continue until Aug. 12. Two newcomers will jump into the school board races and none are yet announced for City Council.

The 2011 election season kicked off Monday in Diamond Bar, opening a filing period for city council and school board candidates until Aug. 12.

Two seats will be vacated for each of the following in the Nov. 8, 2011 elections: City Council, Pomona Unified School District, and Walnut Valley School District.

In Diamond Bar, Carol Herrera and Jack Tanaka will be up for re-election.

City Clerk Tommye Cribbins said Herrera has already filed papers to run as an incumbent in that election and is the only to file papers so far.

In the Pomona Unified School District, Board Vice President Jason Rothman and Board Member Richard Rodriguez will stand for re-election.

One challenger — Diamond Bar resident Frank Guzman — has declared that he will be running for one of the two at-large seats on the PUSD board.

No other candidates were as of yet confirmed for the PUSD run.

In Walnut, Board Member Larry Redinger and Carolyn Elfelt will be up for re-election.

Ben Yip, a member of the Walnut Valley Educational Foundation, has declared that he will be running for one of the WVUSD seats.

Filing as a candidate for school board elections is handled through Los Angeles County. For more information, visit the County Registrar's candidate filing web page.

Cribbins said that people wishing to file as candidates for Diamond Bar City Council should contact her office — — to set up a 30-minute appointment to go over the required forms and processes.

City Council candidates do not need to pay to file, but a $700 fee will be assessed for printing candidate statements, Cribbins said.

The filing period will end on Aug. 12 at 4:30 p.m. for the Nov. 8 election.
