Over at Mt. SAC, officials there decided to evacuate the school. A text message was sent out to students at 11:30 a.m., campus spokeswoman Jill Dolan said.
The two campuses are about a mile apart from each other.
Students at Walnut High were be released at 1:20 p.m. after sheriff's bomb-sniffiing dogs clear the campus, Witmer said. The adminstration decided to let students out early because they had missed lunch and the school provided lunch to students who wanted some, he said.
The evacuation at Mt. SAC created a traffic nightmare around the area.
"There are a lot of traffic right now as we are trying to get people off campus," a sheriff's watch commander said.
Students and staff reported having a hard time getting off campus.
The school had two evacuation drills last week, but students were led to another area of campus, unlike Thursday where they were told to leave.
The campus was reopened at around 3:20 p.m. after the sheriff's bomb-snifing dogs found nothing suspicious at the school, Dolan said.
"It's business as usual," she said. Any students with classes at Mt. SAC should come to class as usual, she said.
Walnut High is off Friday for a district-wide school holiday and students will be off until April 4 for Spring Break.
Mt. SAC is the largest community college in the nation with more than 12,000 fulltime students.
