The factors that often contribute to motorcycle crashes include speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Sheriff’s Department also wants to remind motorists to be watchful of motorcycles, especially when turning and switching lanes.
Another key cause of crashes is a lack of experience. The department is urging riders to seek training and safety information. Many riders do so without getting the proper motorcycle license and skills to ride safely, according to the release.
Riders can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.CA-msp.org or 1-877 RIDE 411 or 1-877-743-3411.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
