WALNUT, CA —Multiple complaints from neighbors of a home with overflowing trash containers, overgrown vegetation and an algae-infested pool are enough for the Walnut City Council to consider declaring it a public nuisance during its Wednesday meeting.

If the declaration is approved, Walnut officials can start an abatement process where they enter the property without the homeowner's permission to address the complaints, a city staff report said.

The meeting will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. and streamed on Walnut's website. Public comments can be emailed to the City Clerk ahead of time.

Officials have made attempts since October 2020 to get the unidentified homeowner to voluntarily address the long-standing issues at his house in the 19000 block of East Mira Loma Way, according to the report.

“Staff received complaints from neighboring residents concerning the improper storage of trash container, unmaintained front yard landscaping and the unfiltered/unmaintained swimming pool in the rear yard,” the report said. “Staff has been unsuccessful in obtaining voluntary compliance from the property owner.”

Several violation notices issued to the homeowner went unheeded. City officials said the continued violations would negatively impact neighbors and “cause the deprecation of surrounding property values.”
