Become a Volunteer Firefighter for the Dixon Fire Department

The Dixon Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Volunteer Firefighter.Β  The application can be found online at www.dixonfire.org.Β  Individuals are encouraged to fill out the application online as the fire department will no longer accept paper applications.Β  If you have previously turned in a paper application, you must go to the web site to re-apply online.Β 

The Dixon Fire Department has a long history of a strong Volunteer force and wishes to continue the program in an effort to strengthen the number of personnel available for emergency responses.Β  A Volunteer Firefighter with the Dixon Fire Department is an intricate part of the team in responding to calls for service.Β  The Dixon Fire Department operates from one station and responded to 1,810 calls for service in 2010.Β  Calls include vegetation fires, structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical aids, and a variety of other types of incidents.

Anyone interested in the qualifications or requirements for becoming a Dixon Fire Department Volunteer Firefighter can access information from the web site.Β  A Volunteer Firefighter will undergo a testing process, medical examination, background check, and training prior to responding to calls.Β  A Volunteer Firefighter responds to calls and works side by side with paid staff on a regular basis.Β  Volunteer Firefighters respond into the station on greater alarm calls to staff additional units as needed.Β  They will be required to spend one 24-hour shift at the station per month, attend training drills and be an active member.Β  Applicants are not required to live in Dixon, however, residency within 30 minutes of the fire department is desirable.Β Β

Applicants may wish to apply as a Volunteer Firefighter as a means to achieve a State Firefighter I certificate through the State Fire Marshal’s Office.Β  This is accomplished by completing an internship and passing an 18 month probationary period.Β  Other applicants may already have this certificate and are still attempting to find employment in the fire service.Β  The Dixon Fire Department is a great way to gain experience, knowledge, education, and training for future employment.Β  Other applicants may just want to give of their time and experience to the community.Β  Any of these categories are acceptable to the Dixon Fire Department and we encourage qualified individuals to apply.Β  The application deadline is February 06, 2011.
