"We would like to send our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy," the Rio Vista Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Rio Vista is about 44 miles south of Sacramento and has a population of about 10,000 residents.

Lt. Jon Mazer told KCRA it was one of the worst crashes he's seen in 26 years at the department.

"People see wide open roads and they just go for it, and it often ends like this. This is probably the worst I've seen, but this is not unusual," Mazer said.
