Do you remember when your children were very young and it would take you an hour to walk around the block as they discovered the magic of nature? Where has that innate curiosity gone? For many students, the concept of science has been transformed from a sense of wonder and awe to listening to lectures, reading textbooks, and occasional hands-off demonstrations. The Academy of 21st Century Learning wants to bring that original wonder of science back into the hearts and minds of students.

The Academy will be hosting a Family Science Challenge at Orchard Elementary School on Thursday, December 12th. The Orchard owl mascots have been stolen by the diabolical Dr. Brainy McSmartypants! The students will have to complete his science challenge to win the owls back. The challenge is composed of six stations, each with a different scientific discipline (chemistry, math and critical reasoning, human body, forensic science, physics, and animal science) and related, hands-on experiments. The students will work together with their parents to earn points through participation. If they earn enough, they will win their school mascots back from Dr. Brainy! After a smashing success last month at Browns Valley Elementary School, the teachers at The Academy are excited to have another chance to geek-out with the students of Orchard Elementary School.
