Local Fireman Climbs High to Support the Fight Against Cancer

A Vallejo Firefighter climbed 1,300 steps to honor Alameda Fire Captain and raises money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

VALLEJO, CA- A firefighter represented the Vallejo Fire Department at the 25th Annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb in Seattle Sunday, fire officials said.

Brett Smith climbed 1,311 steps in honor of Capt. Scott Carnevale of the Alameda Fire Department, according to fire officials. Carnevale passed away on Jan. 3, 2011, from job related cancer, fire officials said.

According to fire officials, Smith and Carnevale were best friends and Smith still wear's Carnevale's protective facemask while out on fire calls in Vallejo.

The stair-climbing competition takes place annually at the Columbia Center, the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River, and raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, according to event organizers.
