Opinion: Let's Make the Season of Sharing Last All Year Round

Wouldn't it be cool if the Spirit of Christmas could last all year?

Kids love presents. Who doesn’t? And now that Christmas is coming my girls – ages 7 and 3 – are going batty.

They are being extra-special good, cleaning their room on the first request, getting along with each other better, and standing at attention at the mere mention of the big red guy’s name.

They know Santa Claus is coming to town, and they better be good – lest they receive their Barbies and Orbeez.

This time of the year brings out the best in my girls and everyone else, not just because of Santa Claus and the promise of presents under the tree on Christmas morning, but because of the excitement of making a difference in someone else’s life so that they too, can share in the Spirit of Christmas.

Throughout my career as a journo, I have witnessed the kindness of strangers during this time of year.

I have covered many Coats For Kids and Toys For Tots drives, food bank family relief efforts, 20-30 Club Christmas drives and a plethora of similar events.

At each of these events, I have always wondered to myself “Wouldn’t it be cool if this type of gusto would last year round?”

Of course there are organizations such as , volunteer, service and church groups who do great things for the community throughout the year, but several that only come out during the holidays.

They are being extra special good this time of the year, like my daughters.

I say, let’s keep that Christmas Spirit going throughout the year. It just might make the world a better place to live in. And keep my daughters in extra-special-best-behavior mode as well.
