Sheriffs Report: Hikers Assaulted, Held at Gunpoint in Cold Canyon Trail Near Lake Berryessa

Solano County Sheriff's Department officials believe the suspect lives in the area.

LAKE BERRYESSA, CA- Two women were reportedly assaulted and nearly robbed at gunpoint while hiking Friday in the Cold Canyon area of Lake Berryessa, according to the Solano County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said in a press release that Friday, March 25, 2016 at 3:00 p.m., two women, 18 and 59, were hiking in the canyon when they were approached by an unknown Hispanic male suspect.

“The suspect displayed a handgun and forced the two women off the trail to a secluded area,” stated the release, “The suspect then assaulted one of the women, demanded money, and quickly fled the area on foot.”

Police say there is evidence the suspect may be residing within the canyon area, and is described as a hispanic male, approximately 25 years old, 5’5”- 5’6” tall, short black hair, no facial hair or a very light mustache, very broken English with a heavy accent. He was last seen wearing- a burgundy shirt, black pants, grey and white tennis shoes.

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging hikers and other users of this area of the county with caution. Hikers are urged to keep a watchful eye of their surroundings, to hike in groups and to report any and all suspicious activity immediately to the Solano County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center by calling 707-421-7090. Please keep in mind cellular reception is commonly unavailable in the canyon area. Cold Canyon is a commonly frequented area popular with local hikers.

“We believe someone enjoying the canyon during the time of this incident may have seen the suspect,” says the release, “Anyone who has information regarding this case is encouraged to call Detective Andrew Hendrix at (707) 784-7058.”

This is an on-going investigation and no further information is available for public release at this time.
