Six Air Conditioner Units Were Stolen on N. Lincoln the Weekend of the KUIU Burglary

It's possible the thefts were related, because they happened in the same area, around the same time. But that's just speculation.

Six exterior air conditioning units were stolen on the 1600 block of N. Lincoln Street on the morning of March 25 -- one day after nearby business KUIU had its window shattered and a cash register stolen.

The air conditioning units were missing from separate units in the retail complex, according to the Dixon Police Department. Air conditioners are targets for thieves because the copper coils inside can be resold for hundreds of dollars.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be over $22,000.

"This does not include the cost of repairing damage done by the thieves," said Sgt. Loren Ellefson in an email. "We are investigating the possibility of these thefts being connected to the burglary at KUIU, as they could have occurred during the same time period, but no conclusions can be positively established at this point."

The difference between the cases is that the KUIU burglary was discovered within a few minutes. The air conditioner thefts were discovered Monday morning.

"This doesn’t rule out the possibility that they occurred at or around the same time," added Ellefson. "There is just no way yet to say for certain."
