The Dublin Arts Collective nonprofit (DAC) hosted a gathering for the first National Arts and Health Day, part of the Arts for EveryBody initiative. Across America, communities celebrated the power of the arts to enhance well-being with events inspired by the theme “No place like home.”

Dublin's celebration took place at Don Biddle Community Park, in the shadow of the imposing sculpture “Crossroads” by Steven Whyte. The event kicked off with a lively morning workout led by fitness coach Christine Pham. Despite the unusually chilly weather, participants were full of energy and enthusiasm.

The City of Oakland was one of the officially designated partners of Arts For Everybody and joined 17 other cities across the country in hosting large scale community events, each reflecting their unique community stories. Edutainment for Equity hosted the Oakland event called “No Place Like the Town.” It included a public discussion and interactive art show to recognize both the struggles and strengths of living in Oakland. The event aimed to support the motto “love life” and the spirit of Oakland's elders, “all power to the people.”

Julia Tomtania, President of the Dublin Arts Collective and City of Dublin Heritage and Arts Commissioner, was thrilled with the turnout in Dublin. “Seeing our community come together to celebrate art and health is incredible,” Tomtania said. “As the DAC we will keep drawing attention to the value that participating in the arts brings.” The DAC has several upcoming events including a members show, a youth art show, an art auction in partnership with the USS Hornet and a menopause art show, to name a few.

National Arts and Health Day has set an exciting precedent, highlighting the essential role of the arts in enhancing community well-being across the country.
