Patelco Services Mostly Restored Following 2-Week Outage

Members have access to most functions and services as of Monday, but gaps remain. The credit union said it will reimburse late fees.

DUBLIN, CA — Patelco said Monday that it has restored most functionality and services following a two-week outage caused by a ransomware attack.

As of Monday, members have access to accounts, balances, and the ability to move money via online and at Patelco branches. Still several functions have either limited functionality or are unavailable, including electronic statements, opening new accounts, receiving new loans, and more. See here for a full list.

Patelco also said that it is waiving most fees for the months of July and August, including account fees, overdraft fees, credit card fees, and late loan fees. Customers who were charged for late payments will also be reimbursed.

Anyone with questions can contact the security incident hotline at 800-358-8228 extension 3030, or send a secure message through the mobile app.

“I know that many of you have asked why this process has taken so long,” Patelco CEO Erin Mendez wrote in a Monday morning email to members. “I want to share that we have meticulously examined and bolstered our environment to bring our systems back online. Cybersecurity defense is a constantly moving target, particularly for financial institutions, which are often targets for these kinds of attacks. We remain committed to making strategic investments in the advanced tools, teams, and partners that help keep us safe.”

The credit union has still not released information on the exact nature of the ransomware attack. Two class-action lawsuits have been filed against Patelco, alleging negligence.
