Fire Near Eagle Rock Border Burns 75 Acres

The blaze in Chevy Chase Canyon is expected to last into Saturday morning.

Firefighters from several cities, including Los Angeles and Sierra Madre, are struggling to contain a brush fire that swept through Chevy Chase Canyon in Glendale, north of the 134 West freeway and near the border of Eagle Rock.

About 50 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department, including Station 55 on York Boulevard, responded to a request for assistance by the Glendale Fire Department shortly after 2 p.m., LAFD Principal Information Officer Capt. Jaime Moore said.

The fire has burned about 75 acres of grass in the canyon, but there is no danger to residential or commercial structures nearby, Moore said, adding that the fire would probably last through the night and into Saturday morning.

“The dark black char and ash from the fire is very hot and has lot of radiance,” Moore explained.

Flames also swept through brush on both sides of Harvey Drive, on the edge of the Eagle Rock border, a short walk north of the In & Out Burger restaurant.

The fire-fighting operation initially included four water-dropping helicopters, Moore said, adding that three helicopters are currently on the scene, assisting the firefighters.

“It’s a slow-moving fire in moderate to heavy brush, with moderate wind conditions,” Moore said.
